501 Foster Street, Durham

Durham Central park is home of a skate park, playground, and green spaces that host a variety of events. Events include art festivals, farmers market , free yoga and more.

The playground houses a couple of slides and a rubber surface incline or large rocks to climb up. At first glance, not much to do. But my kids were fascinated (perhaps by it’s uniqueness) and played there for quite some time.

The metal slides fortunately have a sun shade and even on a hot July day they were not too hot to slide down. For those of you with younger ones, the climbing up the rocks may not be something they are ready to do. But mine (almost 4 and 6) loved it and did it over and over again.

Also find a couple of animal sculptures, a walking path to a small stream, a home for uncolonized bees and a skate park. Both my children loved watching the kids use their skateboards, rollerblades and bikes on the obstacles. They are both asking for skateboards for Christmas now.

The park has some shaded areas, but the skate park and most of the playground are pretty direct sun. I’m not sure if they have public bathrooms here, but I did not see any on our exploration.

So the playground here is not something I would visit just on it’s own. But this place is perfect for an outing to a farmers market or art festival with a stop at the playground.

We like Durham Central Park, but by far our favorite Durham place is the Museum of Life and Science., you can learn more about it here.
