910 E. Davie Street Raleigh, NC
Davie Street Park is a small community park located near Transfer Co. Food Hall. Since this park was so close, it was an easy spot to let the kids run off a little steam after dinner (and a giant ice cream sandwich)!
The park is a small older style metal play structure with a sand surface. There is a grassy area to run and play and the park is almost entirely fenced in. There is not a fence blocking the road, but that’s where the picnic shelter is located so it acts as a sort of barrier. The playground has minimal shade, but the nearby picnic shelter can give you a respite from the heat on a hot summer day.
The park itself is adjacent to Hunter Elementary, a popular WCPSS magnet school). You can see the school playground from the park, but there is a fence between the two. The neighborhood in this area is changing quite a bit with the addition of the food hall and lots of new houses being built. I’d say it has it’s rough parts, but we felt safe there during the day. There weren’t really a lot of people around except for those visiting the school or walking to the food hall.
A little park history for you, according to the City of Raleigh website Davie Street Park was dedicated to Lucille Hunter in 1927. Nearby Hunter Elementary was named after her, and she was the first African American teacher to have a school named after her in North Carolina!
Picnic Shelter and Restrooms
One of the best features of Davie Street Park is the large picnic shelter with restrooms. Unfortunately, the doors to the bathrooms were locked when we were there in the morning. I’m guessing the doors are only unlocked if there is an event scheduled, which is really inconvenient when you have a toddler with a marble-sized bladder! The picnic shelter had a lot of tables though, and I was impressed with the size of it. This isn’t a very popular park, so it would be a great, semi-private place to host a birthday party or event!
