Are you looking for another fully accessible park in Wake County? Look no further than Morreene Road Park in Durham! Similar to Marsh Creek Park, Sassafras at Laurel Hills, and the Kids Together Playground in Cary, this Durham playground is fully wheelchair accessible, which also makes it easy for toddlers and their parents to navigate the wide ramps and play areas.

Playground

The playground at Morreene Park has a rubber surface, but it’s much firmer than some of the other bouncy ones we’ve encountered. The park website says that this is to make it more wheelchair friendly. The playground also contains some fun elements like the “sway fun” that everyone loves, and a braille clock and alphabet printed on one of the panels. The playground itself is a little reminiscent of a castle, so my creative girls girls acted as if they were princesses hiding from a dragon. The castle is definitely not as detailed as the wooden playground at Kelly Road, but it still put my kids imagination in overdrive.

Nearby is a swing area with two traditional swings and two baby bucket swings. It had recently rained so the ground between the playground and the swings had become a bit of a mud pit, so watch out!

Picnic Shelter and Restrooms

Adjacent to the playground is a very small picnic shelter with one table, so I don’t recommend this for a birthday party spot. The restroom facility closes in the winter months to ensure the pipes don’t freeze, which is extremely inconvenient if you have small children with even smaller bladders.

The playground at Morerene Road Park backs up to the tennis courts, where we saw lots of people playing games. The playground is not fully fenced in, but the fence surrounding the tennis courts helps keep everything fairly contained. There was also partial shade from the surrounding trees, but we were there in the evening so I’m not sure how it will be at midday. It looks like it will probably get direct sun at some points, so may get a bit hot in the summer.
