It was one of those mornings. My two kiddos slept late slept late and we were running behind. I was rushing my 2 kids (3 and 18 months) which is kind of like sweeping during a dust storm. But I continued on this crazy quest because it was art class today.
We DO NOT miss art class.
My daughter has taken a couple of classes through Raleigh Parks and Rec, but her art class is by far the favorite. Petite Picassos is offered at the Sertoma Art Center for 3-4 year olds. To say my daughter loves her art class is an understatement. She has all her artwork proudly displayed over her bed. Each class starts with reading a story and then doing a corresponding art project.
To say I am a little obsessed with making lists of pros and cons would be… well, not inaccurate.
So here are the Pro’s:
- The other classes we’ve taken through Raleigh Parks and Rec have required parent participation. Petite Picassos is a preschool prep course and emphasizes student independence. So they request you stay on site but you are not in the classroom with your child. If you have another child you are caring for that is GOLDEN. Or if you would just like an hour of quietly surfing the web or reading a book it would be pretty great too.
- The teacher, Ms. Michelle, is incredible. The kids love her and they listen to her too. I’ve spent a good bit of time just outside the classroom and have even taken a sneak peek and I’ve never seen any kind of chaos. She is soft spoken and kind but also totally in control. I don’t know how she does it.
- Last but most importantly this class has inspired my daughter. She’s always been creative, usually seen in her crazy outfits and fashion accessories. She now draws everyday, multiple times a day. And her drawings are starting to take recognizable forms. And today she made a caterpillar with play-doh. She’s always enjoyed art but now she loves it. And I love that she loves it.
Cons:
I am trying my best to be objective. I honestly cannot think of any cons. The class is around $60, which is more than many of the classes offered through parks and rec, but it is also longer. So it is about $10 a class. I’ve already signed my budding artist up for another session.
