**Sensored Vibes is Permanently closed as of 2022**
Do you have a neurodiverse child or a child on the spectrum? Sensored Vibes is a new indoor play area opening on July 17th, 2021 that is just for your family! Occupational Therapist, plus a mom of a child with sensory processing disorder and a brother with autism, owner Tynisha has crafted the perfect place for children who either seek or avoid sensory input to play in a safe environment. She has thoughtfully curated toys and equipment to engage all of the senses, plus a quiet room for those who need a place to relax from all of the sensory stimulation. There are so many other indoor play areas in the area, it’s wonderful to see a place tailored specifically to the needs of our neurodiverse community!
Designed specifically for children and families with sensory processing disorder
I’ll preface this review by stating that neither of my 3 children have sensory processing disorder, so I am not completely familiar with the struggles that these children and their parents endure. I do, however, have many friends with children who are either on the spectrum or have been diagnosed with SPD. Based on our conversations, I know that sometimes it can be difficult for these children to play in public areas without receiving looks and judgement. I know that no one wants to be in that situation, so I think it is amazing that these families can have a space specifically for them!
Sensored Vibes is limited to children with sensory needs and their families, so you know you will be surrounded by other kids and parents who get what you’re going through. We were lucky to tour the space prior to the grand opening so we can bring you the information you need to make an informed decision about where you play.
Open Play
The Sensored Vibes sensory clubhouse will be available for open play on Monday through Saturday from 9am-6pm starting July 17th. You will be able to choose either one, two, or three hour open play sessions. You can buy a play pass and reserve your time slot on the website. Pricing will be $12 for one hour, $22 for two hours, or $30 for three hours of play per child.
The play area is thoughtfully designed for both sensory seekers and sensory avoiders. The main play area contains a large, custom built zip line, monkey bars, and climbing contraption. While we were there they had a disc swing on the zip line so you could lay down and slide the length of the room. The monkey bars and swinging handles were also installed so you could climb to the top and monkey across. My 5 year old really enjoyed the hammock seats and I could hardly get her out of there! The owners of Sensored Vibes plan on switching out the equipment on the monkey bars for a new experience each time you play.
Mystery Room
The mystery room will offer exciting sensory attractions that they plan to change out monthly! It is currently set up as our “music and vibrations” monthly attraction with a vibrating mat, books, and musical instruments.
Quiet Room
For those who are feeling a little overloaded with all of the sensory input, you can retreat to the separate quiet room. There is a treehouse-like fort at the top of the stairs where your child can hide out and relax a little. There’s a great chair for mom, and there are plans to install a super cool bubble feature for full relaxation. This is a great place to retreat if all of the sensory input becomes too much to handle.
Separate Baby Play Area
Similar to lots of other play areas in Raleigh, Sensored Vibes has a little nook for babies to play on their own. We appreciate these separate baby play areas for the little ones to safely crawl and interact with kids their own age. The space has some padded foam blocks like at Marbles Kids Museum, plus some handles for pulling up and a small toddler climbing wall. Tynisha plans to add lots more age-appropriate toys before their opening on July 17th, so there will be lots of things for the younger kids to safely explore.
Snack Bar
We can’t forget the snacks! Sensored Vibes is equipped with a small kitchen, so the owners will have a small snack bar included with admission. They will offer daily light refreshments free while supplies last for the day. Customers can also utilize the community kitchen to store their own personal food items as needed. This is an amazing perk for those days you forget to pack a snack!
Memberships
If you plan on visiting the play space frequently, you may want to invest in a membership! The lowest membership is $55 for 4 open play visits a month. There are multiple packages to fit the needs of every family, and some even include 4-8 occupational therapy sessions per month!
Occupational Therapy
Upon speaking to owner Tynisha, she informed me of the challenges that many families can face with occupational therapy. Sometimes insurance won’t cover it or there are long delays with referrals to specialists. At Sensored Vibes, Tynisha plans on bringing her experience as an occupational therapist into the space. She will offer therapy sessions to anyone who wants them, with no hoops to jump through dealing with insurance or referrals. Your best bet if you would like to include therapy sessions, is to purchase the platinum membership or higher, which includes 4-8 sessions per month.
Directions
I found the Sensored Vibes play area a little hard to find because it’s not your typical shopping center play place. The building it is located in is more like a medical building. You will need to go inside the Bold Building and walk through the elevator lobby. Take a right and follow the signs to suite 138. It was just a wooden door with no sign so I felt like I need to knock before I entered. I believe by the grand opening they will have a better sign on the door though, so just walk on in and start playing! Your kids will love the alphabet hopping letters that greet you at the door! Be sure to sign up for the grand opening event on the website!
