If you have a child age 4 and up that loves to dance, sing, and perform, then you need to know about Starbright Little Players in Morrisville! Starbright Little Players provides musical theater shows, workshops, dance classes, acting and voice lessons, and fun activities for children ages 4 and up. We were invited to attend their most recent performance of Frozen Jr. and if the show is any indication of the camp experience, then I know your kid will have a blast and learn so much by participating in such a great stage production!
The Frozen Jr Production
At the Frozen Jr performance I was surprised to see kids of all ages performing onstage together. The ages ranged from 4 to I’d guess probably 16. The director found a role for all ages and abilities, and everyone did a great job with the part they were given. The show started off with Anna and Elsa as young kids, so the main acting parts weren’t limited to only older kids. The younger kids were also included throughout the show as backup dancers and extras, so don’t worry – your young child will definitely have a part that’s perfect for them.
I’ll also add that the singing was very good for a group of kids! I was impressed with the harmony in the chorus, and Elsa could really sing! It seemed like there wasn’t as much focus on dance, but a couple songs had more choreography than others. I could tell the main focus was on the acting and singing. Overall I was impressed with the performance, and think it’s a great way to get your kids on a stage and learning about the theater.
Typically, each performance at Starbright Little Players would have two casts that work together to bring you one show. The performance we saw was a little different since it had been delayed since last March due to to the pandemic. The cast was separated into two different groups that performed on different nights instead of having the two casts work together on one show. This caused some delays between scenes since the actors didn’t have enough time to change costumes. I think the breaks actually helped my 4 and 6 year old stay engaged, but my 3 year old got a little antsy and lost focus by the end.
Attend a Performance
You may think that only family and friends of participating children can attend the final performance, but tickets are available to anyone who would like to attend! I think any kid will enjoy seeing other children their age up on a stage. Cost was $12 for Frozen Jr, and the final play was held at Theatre Raleigh near Triangle Town Center. This is a new theater space that just opened during the pandemic, owned by a professional, non-profit theatre company that started in 2005. They have remodeled the space and transformed it into a wonderful venue that will host various theatrical performances throughout the year, including rentals to other local theater classes like Starbright Little Players.
I’m excited to have a theater closer to home than just DPAC in Durham and the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Raleigh. I’m not sure if all of the Starbright Little Players performances will be held here or at another venue, but you can rest assured that you will see a great show either way!
Upcoming Events at Starbright Little Players
Registration is open now for Summer camps and classes at Starbright Little Players. They have a number of upcoming productions that you can get your kids involved in this Summer. My 4 year old was so excited to see Moana on the list, but unfortunately we will be out of town for one of the two weeks of camp. They will also have camps for Little Mermaid Jr, Aladdin Kids, and Singin’ in the Rain Jr. Each play is customized for kid performers and your child will spend their two weeks of camp rehearsing and perfecting the show before the final performance.
My 4 year old LOVES to act and perform, so I can’t wait to get her signed up for an acting camp! I’m so glad that there’s an offering for this age group, so definitely take advantage of it if you have a kid who wants to be onstage!
