Science and crafts with kids leads to as many pinterest fails as successes, and really I am OK with that. In an internet world that tends to highlight the success, let me tell you – sometimes this whole toddler science experiment thing can be a pretty big miss.
Hopefully you read the post from last week about experimenting with colored vinegar and baking soda, if not check it out here.
So for this week’s experiment I again went to Buggy and Buddy for a dancing rice experiment.
Per their website you will need:
- Clear container
- Water
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Rice (We used a short grain brown rice.)
- Spoon
- Optional: Food coloring
So as I had all the above ingredients from last week’s experiment except for rice, which is easy enough to pick up at the grocery store. We don’t eat rice but I can use the left overs to add to a sensory bin.
So this experiment the rice is suppose to “dance” as the vinegar and baking soda mixed. And it works… but the kids were just not “wowed” by it. I think perhaps they were a bit to young for this one. BUT, if you have the ingredients already it’s worth a shot. Costs almost nothing. Besides kids still enjoyed the mixing part so it wasn’t a total bust.
If you decide to do it, I would recommend only putting a few grains of rice in the mixture so the bubbles can get around them and make them “dance”.
So on to a craft.
If you visit Glued to my Crafts Blog you will get a ton of paper plate crafts. I’m totally going to do this car one with my car obsessed little boy soon:
But this week we did animals since we were planning on visiting Aloha Safari Zoo.
They turned out cute, both kids loved making them. What are you up to this week? Check out more science and crafts with kids posts here.
