If you have never heard the song “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” then be prepared to have it stuck in your head like forever. Worse than “Let it go”. My daughter started kindergarten (read more on that here) and her teacher has a website of songs and resources. One of them was Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, which I had never heard. So I was letting my kindergartener and her little brother listen to it. Which may have been an awesome decision or my worst parenting decision yet. I’m not sure. Because younger brother LOVED this song more than sprinkles and goldfish. So over the past 2 weeks we have played it incessantly.
We’ve done Chicka Chicka videos, dance parties and color pages. It’s been his lifeline while his big sister is at school. So I pulled out my vinyl cutter – a cameo sillouette (I have an older model) and enjoyed some creative time.
In my cameo silouette software, I uploaded free clipart that was the basic shape of a coconut tree, traced it, increased the size and viola! All finished. The Pinning Mama has some great tutorials if you need some guidance.
So my little boy already had a magnet board in his room – an oil drip pan that I put up during his vehicle obession days with 3M strips. I don’t love that it says “drip pan” on it, but it does give a large magnetic surface. We had vehicle magnets on it for awhile, but he’s since discovered a love of marine life. So he wasn’t really using it much lately, and I was glad to repurpose it for this project.
I bought melissa and doug magnet letters for the finishing touch. They are a tad more pricey than the plastic magnet letters, which you could certainly use. But these are really sturdy and I am hoping these will last a long time.
He was then able to recreate the song/book, which we’ve done at least 100 times today. Total cost of the project was under $30 and it was only that much because I didn’t have any green or brown vinyl on hand. You could certainly recreate the coconut tree on the side of your refridgerater and *maybe* distract your child while you cook dinner. If you don’t have a vinyl cutter, you can order a premade vinyl coconut tree.
Or skip the whole project and order this ready to go playset:
This project was fun to do during this humid and rainy week. But we’ll be back out to the playgrounds soon!!
