The Triangle Land Conservancy (TLC) is dedicated to conserving land across the triangle. They have created a hiking challenge to encourage people to get outdoors and exploring their land! TLC owns ten nature preserves throughout Wake County, many of which I had never heard of until I learned about the Seven Wonders of Wake County!
We plan on visiting each preserve and doing individual reviews, but since many of you are looking for a Summer Bucket List that can actually be completed during the pandemic, I figured I would go ahead and let you know about this awesome challenge! Unfortunately the Wake County Junior Naturalist Challenge will be impossible to complete without educational programs happening at parks this summer, but it’s another challenge to complete once the world opens back up!
Enroll in the Challenge
Click on the following link to register yourself in the hiking challenge. TLC membership is not required and registration is open to all ages. Just remember that each person participating in the Challenge should register themselves separately and log their hikes separately. Parents may register and complete the hike log for their children and themselves.
Upon completing the challenge, participants who are NOT members of TLC will receive a year’s membership. Current TLC members will get a prize pack, including goodies like a water bottle, canvas bag, and a $25 gift card to the Great Outdoor Provision Company!
Once you register, you have one year to complete six hikes at the following preserves:
- Brumley Forest Nature Preserve
- Flower Hill Nature Preserve
- Horton Grove Nature Preserve
- Johnston Mill Nature Preserve
- Swift Creek Bluffs Nature Preserve
- White Pines Nature Preserve
Record your Hikes
After you complete a hike, you must record it within a week at the following link.
You have the option of either writing a short sentence about your hike, or submitting a picture as photo proof. Pictures sound easier to me, so we will be logging our hikes that way!
Visit the TLC website to learn more about the conservancy and their hiking challenge!
